Chapter One
The crisp air of November whistled through the busy streets of San Francisco, rattling the window panes of the many apartments that adorned it like baubles to a tree. Squeezing itself into the unsuspecting’s apartments.
One apartment, in particular, was especially chilly. Perhaps that was due to the fact that one of the windows was wide open and the radiator was broken but the sleeping victim didn't seem to mind.
Sun filtered itself through the dusty blinds lighting up the room with a warm glow. The room was a good size for a bedroom but did look slightly small due to the amount of clothing and other debris scattered around it in an unorderly fashion.
And there she was miss sleeping beauty herself, sleeping in her cat pyjamas completely unaware of the banging at her front door. The young woman's hair resembled a bird's nest, The curls matting together and forming terrible knots, framing her dark-skinned face with its vastness.
Finally, she heard the banging, rolling around in her bed groaning as she rubbed her eyes. Irritated by this sudden awakening she hauled herself out of bed and shuffled ungainly over to the door, through the rest of her cluttered apartment.
Yanking it open she squinted out, everything in her sight blurred. Regaining her focus she noticed that there was a man standing in front of her. He had messy, brown hair and was wearing a t-shirt with denim jeans. He didn’t appear to be much older than her.
“What… do you want?” she sighed looking him up and down.
“I’m Jake, I’m moving in next door. Wait, were you, sleeping?” He questioned in an English accent.
“Uh yeah, do you have a problem with that?” She questioned, getting into her, I’m judging you, stance.
“Sorry, it’s just that it’s ten and I didn’t think that anyone could sleep in that late,” he replied noticing her stance and trying to make the better of the situation.
“IT’S TEN?!” She screamed.
“Uh, yeah. Is something wrong?” he asked watching her run around her apartment like a headless chicken.
“Well if you call having to be at work in thirty minutes wrong then yeah,” she shouted to him whilst shoving bread clumsily in the toaster.
"That's not too bad" Jake commented watching her slightly amused.
"Have you seen the state of me, I look like I live in a dumpster," she replied glaring at his smirking face.
“Well it was nice to meet you, have fun,” he teased.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” she said hurriedly slamming the door in his face.
Running into her bedroom to try and tame her crazy mane of hair Jake spoke to her from the other side of the door.
“Wait you didn't tell me your name,” he shouted to her through the wooden door.
“It’s Meg. Now would you just leave me alone,” she shouted back shoving her toast into her mouth with one hand and trying to brush her hair with the other.
“Ok then. See you around then Meg,”
“I sure hope not,” she murmured to herself running back to her bedroom to get changed out of her pyjamas.
Racing around the apartment at the speed of light she finally managed to zoom out the door with twenty minutes to spare. Five minutes to get to work and get changed into her uniform before her shift is meant to start. As she was running down the stairs she passed Jake carrying a cardboard box, opening his mouth to speak he noticed her expression and chose wiser.
Down in the building’s parking lot, Meg clambered into her car as fast as she could and started the car's engine. Pulling out of the parking lot as fast as she could she hit the gas, praying that she could get to work on time.
