Prologue
July 21st, 2091. Only one word could describe this day, fire. Everyone woke up hoping that it would be just a normal Summer day. But nothing could compare the deadly heat on that day. Forest fires erupted everywhere, thousands of people died from heatstroke, not even the air conditioner could help. The unbearable heat only lasted for three days before the world finally went back to normal although the outdoors kept a yellowish glow. The heat did more than start fires, but it sparked a drought. Water was scarce across the entire country, and with no water came no food. The price on food and water increased. Fast forward two years and now there is an oil crisis. There is only one known oil reserve left and everyone wants it. It's funny how it only takes a small amount of this substance to start an entire war, as if the world didn't have enough problems already. After a few months a massive bombing happened in the middle of the battlefield killing too many American soldiers. Still determined to win the fight, they started drafting men and women into the war. Families were ripped apart, and orphanages became overrun with children, forcing them to live on the streets. Gangs formed, making the residents that weren't homeless fear for their lives as they went out killing and stealing. America had fallen apart, and no one was doing anything to stop it, they were too focused on the war. Then the government was on an all-time low of soldiers, so they went to Plan B. They had been secretly funding a lab for several years to advance the research of giving human supernatural abilities. The scientists confirmed that their experiments would work and that they only needed people to do the test on. The government was pleased with the news and sent out a patrol to capture children off the streets; they were going to turn them into the new soldiers, the super soldiers.

This is an interesting premise! Maybe you could elaborate a little more on how all the fires started? I mean, if it affected all of the US, that would be an astronomical amount of wildfires; which would be cool to learn about. Also, there are a few places where you forgot to add a coma or two. The sentence "The heat did more than start fires, but it sparked a drought" the "but" is unnecessary, and is a bit confusing with it. All in all, though, I'd love to read more

Chapter 1: Scarlett All the chapters are in first person POV, the character whose POV you will be reading is the chapter name
My gloved hand was pressed against the glass of an abandoned office building. I was looking outside at the empty streets as crinkled papers tumbled down the grey road. I sighed and looked over my shoulder, my friend from school, Rainne, was huddled in the corner her arms wrapped around her legs. I turned back to the window, looking up at the cloudy yellow sky, turning darker as night approached, the faint glow of a full moon peeked through the clouds. A surge of panic rushed through my body when a group of kids with green handkerchiefs, tied onto parts of their body, walked past the window. I backed away into the corner where Rainne was and waited for them to pass. “What gang?” Rainne whispered. I closed my eyes, each gang had a color, Green. Green. Green. “I think it was the Chartreuse.” “Oh, are they gone?” “I think so.” Rainne looked at me with a serious expression on her face. “We should really think about joining a gang. We aren't having any luck with being on our own. Maybe they could-” Rainne began coughing. She was sick, and I couldn’t help her. “Rainne you know we can’t join a gang, you know what they’ll do if they find out you’re sick.” Rainne took a deep breath. “Scarlett, we can’t keep hiding, freezing every night, and then hiding some more. Sometimes we don't even have food! And besides some gangs can’t be that bad.” I bit my lip. We had a close run with a gang before, I don't quite remember the name of it, but they were wearing dark red. They didn't seem so friendly and it left a bad impression on me. But, I had heard of another group, they were called Jewels, they sounded nice enough, at least that's what Tyler said. “Well I guess, it wouldn't be that bad…” Rainne put a hand on my shoulder. “I'm not forcing you into anything... we can stay the way we are now, I'm just suggesting an alternative that might be better.” I glanced back at the window the street was dark now, only the small blue glow from the lights creeping through the window. I felt Rainne rest her head on my shoulder, I looked down at her, her eyes were closed she was trying to sleep. I sighed and tilted my head back not wanting to disturb Rainne. I closed my eyes and felt myself falling asleep. I was awakened by the sound of sirens. I bolted up straight causing Rainne to wake. “What is it?” She asked in a panicked tone. “I don't know… I thought the police force was disbanded.” I stood up and walked up to the window. I saw people in black armor holding guns to their chest, they looked like they were searching for something. I slunk back into the shadows and held my breath as one of the men passed the window. I could tell Rainne was holding her breath too, hoping not to be caught. The man was just about to pass before Rainne let out a rather loud cough. The man stopped and shouted something to his buddies. I grabbed Rainne’s wrist and pulled her closer to me, we were so dead, so very, very, dead. The door creaked open and three long shadows stretched across the floor, followed by the clicking sound of boots on the tile floor. Then a light blinded me, I raised my hand up to block out some light squinting my eyes. “Put your hands up!” A deep voice growled. Too scared to protest I let go of Rainne’s wrist and raised my hands, a man rushed to me and pulled them behind my back, I felt cool metal being wrapped around my wrists. “What are you doing? We didn't do anything.” “Just be quiet.” The man hissed. The first male who seemed like their leader, nodded his head and lifted a radio to his mouth. “We got two. We’re taking them to the unit.” There was no response, he put the radio back onto his belt and motioned with his fingers telling the other guys to ‘move out’. They led us out of the building, towards their two cars. I realized they were splitting Rainne and I up. “No. Wait! You can't separate us!” I protested, as the man behind me shoved me forwards. “You not getting split up.” He said, opening the door to the car and shoving me inside, he paused before closing it. “You’ll see each other again.” He slammed the door shut and got into the passenger's seat. I looked around, this wasn't like a normal cop car, the windows had a sort of metal shield on them and there was a thick piece of glass splitting the car in half keeping the cops separated from her. The man who handcuffed me said something to the driver, but the glass muffled it. He leaned forward and grabbed a silver can, it had no labels or anything. I scooted forward trying to see what he was doing, I watched him open a small hatch in the glass, that connected to what looked like an air vent, he placed the can in it and twisted it before turning back to his normal position. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused as to what he did, but then I saw a white smoke flow from the air vent and start to surround me. I started to feel lightheaded, and the world seemed to spin. I slunk down in the seat as black dots started to cloud my vision. My eyelids drooped, and I soon fell into darkness.
I awoke gasping for air, I looked around I was in a white room. There was a breathing mask on my face, and I couldn't move my body. I glanced to my side where another person was sleeping, I looked the other way and saw somebody else. Where am I? I heard someone gasp for air, followed by a few more, and soon there was silence again. The silence only lasted for a few minutes because the sound of someone entering the room broke it. “How many have awaken?” A male asked. “Forty.” A woman responded. “What about the rest?” “All dead.” Dead? Who died, where am I! My gaze flitted around quickly trying to find this woman and this man. But I saw no one. I heard the squeak of wheels and felt myself moving, and I was out of the white room. I was wheeled down a long gray hall before we turned into another room. This one was darker and only a faint blue light illuminated the room. I looked around, there seemed to be no one in the room. But how did I get here? I felt a cold hand touch my left arm, and I looked at them, it was a woman, she had a gentle face and seemed to be focused on the needle in her hand that was filled with an orange liquid. She bit her lip and slowly lowered the needle to my arm before sticking it inside. I shivered as the liquid traveled through me like ice, then it started to burn like all my veins were shriveling up. I tried to scream but nothing came out, the pain was unbearable, and the world blacked out again. When I was once again aware I was awake, there was ringing in my ears and my lungs were burning. My eyes flashed open, and I screamed causing a rush of water to flow into my mouth. I banged on the glass in surrounding me wanting to be free. In a flash the glass disappeared I flew forward with the water and collapsed to the cold white floor. I threw up what seemed like a gallon of water, I stayed there on my hands and knees gasping my black hair hanging over my head like a wet mop. After a few seconds I looked up. The walls were covered with mirrors, I looked at my reflection. Am I really that skinny? I swear I was tanner than that. I stood up on shaky legs the white hospital gown I was wearing plastered to my skin. I began to walk around the room, trying to find an exit. Only mirrors. I looked at the ceiling, a mirror too. “Rainne” I whispered. “Rainne!” I screamed. My voice echoed throughout the room. I was alone. I banged my fist on one of the mirrors. “Somebody let me out!” No response. I banged on the mirror again and again, my blows turning into punches. I was determined to destroy this mirror, to be free, to find Rainne. Out of energy I looked back at the mirror tiny cracks surrounded where I had punched countless times. My fists were bleeding. I heard a static pop. “Hello subject one. Welcome to Unit One. We thank you for your cooperation and sacrifice to become apart of a new generation of soldiers.” The voice was definitely artificial. “You will be released shortly but I'm going to take a moment to explain what is happening. Sadly you are one of the five subjects who have survived the testing so far, but that won't stop us yet. You will be made public and you will undergo special military training, but you probably won't see the battleground for a long while. For now you will be used a propaganda to help us recruit more people to join the testing. So that's all subject one, we will be letting you out shortly.” There was another pop and then I was back in the silence. One of the mirrors on the opposite side of the room lost its reflectiveness and showed a white wall with a door that was partly opened. I ran towards the door bursting through the opening running into a soaking body. I looked up to see a ginger haired male staring at me with wide eyes. I backed away from him. “I'm so sorry.” “It's fine, but you should probably watch where you are going.” The boy said his voice smooth. “Do, you happen to know where we are?” I asked. “The weird robot voice said we were in Unit One? I just woke up.” He replied. “Same.” I began. “My name is Scarlett by the way.” “I'm Eric.” He said with a smile. “What is this place?” I asked looking around at the hallway, the walls were grey and the ceiling was high up. My gaze darted to a set of metal doors at the end of the hall. Was that my escape route? “I don't know, never seen it before.” Eric began. “I don't even remember how I got here.” I squeezed my eyes, I couldn't remember how I got here either. The earliest memory was Rainne and I hiding from someone. “I-I don't remember either.” I told Eric. “Hello?” I spun around there was a girl I had never seen before, her blonde hair was dripping water and she looked rather mortified. “Who are you guys?” She asked. “I'm Eric.” Eric said moving towards the girl. “Scarlett. Do you know where we are?” The girl shook her head. “My name is Ursula, and I'm sorry I don't know where we are.” “Ursula?” Ursula turned her head, there was a thin boy staring at her his eyes were wide with fear. “Pierre? Oh my god I thought they killed you!” Ursula ran to her friend hugging him. I felt a sharp pain in my chest. Where was Rainne? The all of a sudden as though someone heard my prayers, Rainne came bursting through a door down the hallway, oddly she wasn't soaked like the rest of us. “Rainne!” I screamed as I ran towards her I nearly knocked her off her feet with all the force of me squeezing her in a hug. “Rainne I thought you were gone!” Rainne pulled her head close to mine so that our foreheads were touching. “So did I.” She pulled away from me, looking at the others. “Who are they?” “I don’t know, by the looks of it they went through the same thing we did.” We joined back up with the others before the doors on the opposite end of the hall swung open people in black armor rushed down the hall pointing their guns at us. I raised my hands above my head and the others followed. A guard came over to us and pinned our hands behind our backs cuffing them with thick handcuffs. They escorted us out of the hallway into an open pavilion. There were people in white uniforms walking around talking to others while people dressed just like the guards escorting us stood in front of doorways. They led us through the room and towards a glass enclosure in the middle of the pavilion. Two large glass doors swung open as we approached them and the guards shoved us inside. They quickly removed the handcuffs and left us standing there. I took a moment to examine the area. It seemed like a living space, there was a kitchen area on the back wall near a large dining table, and five beds to the right with little storage chests at the end of them. There was one area that had fogged over glass that you couldn’t see through, I guessed it was probably the bathroom. There was a large round blue rug on the ground with a few couches around a coffee table. I had to admit this was nice. I made my way over to the beds and ran my hands over the soft material smiling to myself, it's felt like forever since I slept in a proper bed. I sat down on the plush surface before bolting upright when there was a static pop. “Hello Subject’s one through five. I am Doctor Killigain.” I narrowed my eyebrows, I recognized this voice. “I hope that you will all find comfort in your new home, and we’re going to give you today to settle in. As for tomorrow we will begin testing you to unlock your new… quirk. If you need anything just press, the blue button near the door and we will send someone to come and help as for now get some rest you have a long day ahead of you.” The static popped again, and the room fell silent. That’s when I started to get an uneasy feeling about this place.

Chapter 2: Ursula As soon as the man called Doctor Killigain stopped talking, I felt my hand dart to Pierre’s. He squeezed my hand like he was scared too, and I looked up at him wondering how he keeps such a brave face even though he’s scared on the inside. “So, um, where are you guys from?” It was that strange girl that Scarlett knew, I think her name was Rainne or something. “I’m from France.” Pierre stated. “Though my parents sent me here as soon as the war started to get bad in Europe.” “That's cool. Scarlett and I are from Rochester.” Rainne looked at me. “What about you?” “Boston…” I whispered. Pierre laughed. “She’s quite shy, she found me hiding on a cargo ship.” The other boy named Eric stepped next to me. “I’m from Rochester as well.” “What are you guys talking about?” Scarlett asked joining the group. “Just about where we are from.” Rainne replied. “Oh that nice….” Scarlett muttered. I felt Pierre let go of my hand and I panicked, I hate talking to strangers. I watched him walk over to the kitchen area examining the area closely, he opened the fridge and let out a laugh. “It works!” Everyone stared at him as he pulled a water bottle out, the plastic clouding as it left the cool air in the fridge. He twisted the cap open and chugged quite a lot of water. “No way!” Eric exclaimed as he ran over to Pierre and snatched the bottle from his hand drinking the rest. Everyone began to walk towards the fridge grabbing bottles and drinking them. I stayed behind, I wasn’t one to go do things. “It’s been so long since I had cold water!” Rainne shouted. Scarlett who was eating an apple, looked at me. “Yo Ursula, you want some?” She grabbed a water bottle and threw it at me, I surprisingly caught it. I felt myself smile as I drank the cold liquid, it had been forever since any of us had the luxury of cold water and fresh fruit. I decided that I should probably join them. After raiding the fridge we found new clothes for all of us, after we changed we all settled down on the couches, I was laying down with my head resting on Pierre’s lap. I have to admit I was pretty tired. “So what do you guys think the testing tomorrow is going to be like?” Eric asked. “I dunno.” Scarlett said. “But by the looks of this place, it's not going to be like school.” Eric let out a chuckle. “Yeah, but what did he mean by unlocking our new ability?” Rainne shrugged. “Not sure, I don’t feel different at all, do you guys?” Everyone shook their head that’s when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. I tensed up my arms wrapping around my torso. “Ursula are you okay?” Pierre asked his eyes clouding with worry. “I’m fine-” I gagged and rolled off the couch. Everyone stood around me as the pain in my stomach got worse, I gritted my teeth. “Someone do something!” Pierre yelled. “I don’t know what to do!” Rainne replied. “The blue button!” Eric said, but Scarlett was already halfway there the button buzzed as she pressed it repeatedly. I felt something drip out of my mouth and I could feel it coming out of my nose too. I began to cry, the pain worsening. Pierre bent down next to me. “What the hell?” He wiped some liquid dripping out of my mouth away, his finger was covered in a black substance. My breathing started to shorten as the pain started to fade away, I don’t think I was closing my eyes but my vision was going black. I heard Pierre screaming and the sound of guards rushing in. The last thing I remember was standing up and a low growling noise before losing consciousness. I awoke with a breathing mask on my face, my hands were tied down to the bed I was on along with my legs. I looked at my arms that were stained black like I had covered them in black pen and tried to wash it off. Suddenly a mans face loomed over my head, I couldn't make the features out, because he was wearing a surgical mask. I bit my lip and started to wiggle my arms to free myself. “It seems she’s awake, Mister Killigain.” The man said. My eyes widened the doctor that talked to us in the glass room. “Is everything stable with her?” Killigain asked. The man looking at me nodded. “She’ll be fine. We know what to do now if she has another episode.” Episode what did he mean by that? I heard a door close and someone began to loosen my restraints. The mask on my face removed, and I sat up straight to come face to face with the doctor wearing the mask. “Ursula, you’ll be fine.” He said monotonously. “Just be careful and try not to get too emotional.” I furrowed my eyebrows, I was the most emotional person ever! I watched him begin to leave. He paused. “And by the way, you killed three guards last night.” I felt like I was going to pass out. How could I kill three people, I wouldn’t even hurt a fly? I climbed out of the bed still wearing the new clothes I had gotten last night, black tank top, and black leggings with a matching set of black boots. I didn’t like that it was all black but I guess it's better than a hospital gown. I left the room to enter a hallway it was pretty empty but rooms lined the corridor. I sighed not knowing where to go, so I slumped down on the wall and began to wait. I was dozing off to sleep before a voice awakened me. “Uh Miss?” I looked up to see a rather young looking woman staring down at me with dark brown eyes. “H-hello.” “Are you Ursula?” She asked, brushing a stray strand of her brown hair out of her face. “Y-Yes.” I said nervously as I stood up. She smiled. “Oh, that's great I was looking for you. I was told to take you to the briefing, along with the others. Follow me.” I followed the girl down the hall, I rubbed my black stained arms nervously as she led me out of the hospital like area into another that looked like a gym. We stopped on the opposite end of the gym at a pair of large black doors. “They’re waiting for you.” I bit my lip as I pushed the door open just to be greeted by Pierre screeching my name and squeezing me in a tight hug. “Oh my goodness, Ursula I thought you were dead!” He exclaimed in his thick French accent. I let out a tiny laugh as I hugged Pierre back, I felt oddly safe in his arms, and I didn’t want him to let go of me. He stepped away from me and I noticed most of the others staring back at me. Eric was the only one who avoided my eyes, I then noticed the bandage wrapped around his arm. I began to rub my hands together nervously. “That was quite the stunt you pulled last night.” Scarlett said finally breaking the silence. “Yeah…” I began. “I don’t remember a thing though.” “You attacked Eric.” Rainne said joining the conversation. “Well at least I think it was you… you turned into some creepy monster.” I felt my eyes start to water up, the last thing I wanted to be was a monster. I blinked the tears out of my eyes as I tried to remember the events of last night. The only thing that came to me was yelling. I sighed and looked at Eric. “I’m sorry.” Eric rubbed the bandage. “It’s fine.” “Guys.” Scarlett interrupted pointing at a large screen, like the ones at the movie theatres, it was glowing white, but nothing was playing. That's when I noticed that we were in a theatre of some sort, I wandered over to one of the plush chairs that were in the room. I sat down surprised at how comfortable the seats were. The others sat down as well. As if the screen had noticed we had all taken a seat it went black for a few seconds before white again. A rather happy animated character popped up on the screen. “Hello subjects! You are the first to ever be tested on in this facility, I mean in the entire country. And you may be wondering why you’re here. This is a short information video on just that! This is a chart showing the ratio between people in America that are capable of going to war and those already sent to war. As you can see eighty percent of our capable men and women are already out there risking their lives to make the country better!” I noticed how tense the room became once the character shared that info. I felt anger boiling inside me, everyone had lost their parents or family to the war, it was the reason they were discarded into the streets. “With the amount of children left in the country, our government has decided to put them to use. We have sent out teams of collection squads to take these children in for our experimentation. You are the lucky few that have survived the first round of tests. And thanks to you we can adjust and adapt our new chemical so that we won’t lose anymore children. Now I know you’re all scared about what your purpose is in this facility. For now you will be used for propaganda, so you won’t be seeing the battleground anytime soon.” Rainne let out what seemed like a breath of relief. I almost felt like yelling at her, how could she be relieved right now! Of course we wouldn’t be going off to war but even staying here seemed bad we were just going to be used for advertisements! I started to ignore the cartoon, only to be forced into watching it after hearing the animated man talk about the war again. “You are the start of a new generation of soldiers, better, stronger, and more capable than any other soldier in the world. For the next few days we will dedicate them to finding your quirk. Once we’ve found that we will get straight to work with advertising you all. I believe I have caught you up on everything now… so before I go remember… it’s for the greater good of this world and this country.” The man faded away but those last few words still echoed in my mind. We all seemed a little shocked after what we had just heard. But there was no time for panicking, the doors that I had come through burst open and guards came rushing in. I jumped out of the seat looking for somewhere to run to. I saw a guard pin down Rainne while Scarlett was thrashing around in the arms of another shouting. I saw the woman who had led me here gracefully slink through the crowd over to me. She put a hand on my shoulder and whispered. “Come with me, they’ll be fine.” That was the biggest lie I had heard.

3: Pierre
I watched as chaos erupted around me. As soon as I saw the first guard pin down Rainne, I made a dash for the door. Two large arms stopped me in my attempt to the exit. I started to fight back thrashing my body around in their tight grip. In my struggle I noticed a woman walk in over to Ursula, I watched in awe as the lady quietly led Ursula out of the room without putting up a fight. I felt myself be dropped to the floor as my hands were cuffed behind my back. I couldn’t stop wondering where they took Ursula.
The armored men led us out of the room and into the much larger area of the building. I had already made the conclusion this was a training area of some sort. The guards lined us up and pushed down to our knees standing behind us with their menacing guns pointed at our heads. I glanced to my right to see Eric staring at the ground his face twisted in anger, beyond him was Rainne who was whimpering, her face still wet from crying.
The guards behind us suddenly straightened as a well built man walked in. He looked far from scary, but the way the guards reacted he was probably the man in charge.
“I’m sure you all recognize me.” He began.
My eyes widened, it was the man on the intercom when they first arrived, it was Doctor Killigain.
“I hope you all enjoyed the film, I thought it was rather cheesy, but I have to do what the government wants me to do.” He sighed, taking off his glasses and wiping them with his gray shirt before placing them back on his face, he clapped his hands together and smiled. “So you are my lovely five- wait no… there's only four of you. LINDA!”
The woman I had seen take Ursula out of the room came rushing in. “Yes Mister Killigain?”
“Where's the fifth one… don’t tell me they died?”
Linda leaned towards him and whispered something in his ear, whatever she said surprised him.
“Oh, well then, you can go now.” He said waving his hand to dismiss the woman.
I felt myself growing frustrated, I wanted to know if Ursula was okay. “Where is she!” I blurted out, immediately regretting it the moment the words left my mouth.
Killigain looked at me and smirked. “She’s fine.”
I looked down at the ground, ashamed of letting myself get mad like that.
“Okay, so here's the thing, you all have a power of some sort now when we brought you here we gave you a drug that changed your DNA to allow this change to happen to you all. But as it seems, the effect will not simply just appear. We have noted that the ability seems to appear if the body is put into extreme stress and or danger. Now we’re going to be putting you through simulations, you won’t die, but you sure will feel like dying.” He laughed at the last part which left an uneasy feeling in my stomach.
He turned his attention to the guards. “I’m going separate them each, take the black-haired girl out back.” He said pointing to Scarlett. Her guard grabbed her and started to escort her away. “The other girl can go to the pool room, take the boy…” He began looking at me. “To the freezer.”
Panic surged throughout my body, what the hell was the freezer. I didn’t get to hear where they were taking Eric I was too busy worrying about myself.
It was a rather long walk to this so called freezer. We finally stopped in front of a large metal wall. One of the guards left for a split second while the other one held onto me. The one who left came back with a large bucket, he lifted it up with ease and dumped the contents on me. I gasped in shock of how cold the water was. Then I heard the sound of metal scraping the concrete and my cuffs being released, I was shoved forward feeling a rush of cold air hit me like a wall.
I spun around, the door behind me had closed. I looked around the walls were covered in frost and the floor had a thick layer of snow on it. I exhaled watching my breath form in the cold air. I rubbed my arms becoming colder I began walking in circles trying to get warm.
After a long while, about thirty minutes I think, the water on my skin began to freeze. I could see ice on the tips of my eyelashes every time I blinked. I was getting colder and colder by the second but I couldn’t give up now.
I was on my fortieth lap around the freezer, when my legs buckled beneath me. I fell onto the hard cold ground of the freezer, the moment my head hit the ground the freezer went dark.
I blinked my eyes open slowly, my head aching on the side, I sat up and touched the right side of my head where it was hurting. I looked at my hand my fingers were glistening with red blood. I let out a large exhale as my body started shivering.
My skin was pale, it was normally pale, but never this pale. I could feel snot dripping out of my nose, and I couldn’t feel my toes or fingers.
I stood up wanting to move around to maybe generate body heat. I began walking around the room, slowly. Soon my legs started to feel lighter, like the painful cold didn’t bother them anymore. At first I thought maybe I had lost all feeling in my legs, until I noticed that I was moving faster.
It started out as a slow jog, eventually growing to a full on run. I have to say I was quite confused, I had never run at this speed before. The walls of the freezer flew past me in a blur, I stopped running as soon as I heard the familiar noise of metal scraping against the floor. I heard a pop and felt something hit my neck, before I had a moment to process what just happened, I passed out.
I awoke feeling a warm hand on my face. My vision was slightly blurry and I couldn’t make out the figure above me. I blinked my eyes rapidly and sat up. The figure in front of me was Ursula. She flung herself at me, I could hear her crying on my shoulder.
“Oh my god! You’re okay!” Ursula whimpered. “You’ve been gone for two hours! And… and when they brought you back you were so pale, I thought you died.”
My mind flashed back to the events in the freezer, I looked around the room, it was the glass room we first arrived in. “Where is everybody else?”
“I don’t know.” Ursula replied. “You’re the first one to come back. What happened?”
“Nothing, I’m fine.” I lied. Ursula had a fragile soul, I don’t think she could handle hearing about the freezer.
She let out a breath of relief. “I’m just glad you’re okay.”
I tilted my head. “Where did they take you?”
“They took me here.”
I frowned, Doctor Killigain had told us we were finding our abilities. I looked at Ursula and remembered the night before when she had turned into that monster. How could she, this small innocent little girl turn into that monster.
“Is everything okay?” Ursula asked, her voice clouded with worry.
I hugged her. “Everything is fine.”
It was just Ursula and I for about five days. No one came around during those five days, not even the other three. But on the sixth day Eric returned.
He was in pretty bad shape, he looked like he hadn’t slept at all and there were burns all along his back and arms. We tried asking him what happened but he remained silent.
The day after Eric returned, Rainne came. She was in better shape than Eric, but she avoided taking showers.
No one else came after Rainne. We had all assumed she died or something. Eric finally opened up about what happened. He said that they electrocuted him every five minutes, they had done that for those five days until he miraculously pulled himself out of the metal cuffs he was in.
Rainne decided to tell us her story as well, saying that they did nothing with her for the first four days, except lock her in an empty room. Then on the final day they tied weights to her legs and threw her into a pool of water. She said that she almost drowned, until somehow all the water around her went away and she was in her own personal air bubble.
I took the liberty of taking note of everyone's little super power. Ursula, turns into a monster when feeling stressed or scared (she had a slight freak out when Eric told his story), Eric has enhanced strength I had started noticing it around the room, he ripped the bathroom door off its hinges. As for Rainne, it's a tough one. I want to believe she can manipulate the air around her but everytime she washes her hands it's like the water doesn’t stick, maybe she can control water. For me, I have enhanced speed. Sometimes I accidentally speed across the room and run into a wall or something. It's definitely going to need some work.
Things are fine in the Box (we all decided on that name) we still don’t know if Scarlett is ever coming back, but the people here at the unit have been rather kind to us. They brought us things to do, like notebooks and books. Of course most of us haven’t read a book or written anything in five years, so we’re sort of teaching ourselves again.
Two weeks have passed, no sign of Scarlett. We’ve all started growing close to each other, we found out Rainne has a knack for cooking, and that Eric is really good at singing.
We were all sitting on the couches, eating snacks and reading or just talking, when we heard the large glass door open at the entrance of the Box. I stood up to see two guards dressed in their black armor dragging in a bruised and bloody Scarlett. I heard Rainne let out a scream. She ran towards her friend, who the guards had just left on the ground, and crouched next to her.
I walked over to her the others following me, I grimaced at the sight of Scarlett, she was currently unconscious like everyone when they arrived. Her left eye was swollen, there was a nasty cut on her cheek and her nose looked broken. Blood was dried in the corner of her mouth and in streams coming out of her nose. She seemed to have bruises all over.
Eric put his hand on Rainne’s shoulder. “We can’t leave her on the ground.”
Rainne didn’t respond, I guess she was in so much shock to see her friend return like this.
Eric scooped Scarlett up in his arms and carried her over to the bed that we designated just for her. We all sat around her, waiting for her to awake.
