Hi there and welcome to Sanguis. It's not necessarily a novel, but rather just a collection of random stories from random people living in this world.
Most of these have already been pre written, but others may just come in the spur of the moment. Some of the characters will be repeated probably because I love them so much. Anywho, I hope you enjoy these!

Dust There is nothing out here but dust. Just endless hills and valleys of dust. I haven't seen a civilization for miles, which is a blessing and curse. The towns here usually are far apart from each other, but I have found it quite odd that one hasn’t shown up in my journey.
I reached into the sack I had slung over my shoulder and pulled out a bar made of oats and other small foods that were held together by honey; sadly this was my last one. I took a bite out of it as I continued walking. I was on my way to find an old friend of mine. Since I was recently exiled he was the only person I knew I had left- his name is Slate. I had been exiled for various reasons, one being thievery, and two being the fact that I am sixteen and my dragon hasn’t came yet.
Dragons are a big part of Sanguis culture, everyone has one. People of my low ranking tend to have small ones about the size of a dog, and everyone gets one eventually. Majority get theirs when they are thirteen, but not me, it is considered weak to not own such a magnificent creature, and I had always hoped to have one. I remember the morning of my thirteenth birthday, I was so excited to get my dragon. But it never came. My mother told me not to worry and that my dragon would come and it would be the most beautiful thing ever. It's been three years, and I’ve long since stopped hoping.
I looked up into the bright yellow sun using my hand to block out most of the light. It was setting, it would be nighttime soon. I sighed, the journey to find Slate had been taking longer than expected. I pulled my scarf over my face it was a shade of gray from the dust, and kept walking. Not stopping until stars began to shine in the sky.
I sat under a ledge, tending the warm orange glow of a fire. I set down the stick I was using and leaned back on my hands. I hummed to myself as I watched the sky feeling the warmth of the fire on my face. There was a noise.
I jumped up. The noise was unusual, it sounded as though the earth itself was shaking. I stood up and pulled my dagger out of its sheath. I carefully made my way out from the cover of the ledge. There was nothing.
I looked around, still gripping the leather handle of my dagger.
“Hello?” I called. There was no response. I slid the danger back into its sheath and turned around. I froze and looked up, there standing before me was a massive dust dragon.
It stared into my soul with it’s angry orange eyes, but yet, it didn’t seem as though it wanted to hurt me. I debated running, dust dragons were known to be aggressive. It lowered it's head closer to my face and let out a large hot exhale blowing my hair back.
“tuus sum”
I gasped, it talked to me. My face was a mixture of confusion and joy, I reached out and touched it's scaly grey skin. “You are mine.”

Moon I stood there my elbows resting on the ledge of my balcony as I looked down at the village below from the safety of the castle. I looked up at the darkening sky , I could see a shadow flying in the sky towards the castle. As the figure came near I recognized what it was. It was my sister Elaine, she was riding on the back of a large gold and white sun dragon. I watched her land in the field just below my tower and hop off her dragon she patted the beasts head and looked up at me.
“Hey bro! You should probably be getting ready!” She called as she removed her shiny golden helmet from her head.
I sighed, Elaine was what they called a sun rider. Her job was to make sure the sun rose in the morning and set in the night. As for me I was a moon rider, it was my job to rise the moon at night and lower it in the morning. I walked off the balcony back into my bedroom towards a cabinet that contained my riding gear. It wasn’t as extravagant as Elaine’s, simple black clothes with a long silver cloak.
I made my way towards the stables there was a part sectioned off for the dragons of the royal family. Elaine was there washing her dragons scales, she smiled when she saw him and waved.
“Hey Oberon. I haven’t seen Chorus around. She must be hiding again.” Elaine said as she squeezed soapy water out of a rag.
Chorus was my dragon, she never liked the other dragons and tends to always stay hidden. “Thanks Elaine.” I patted Elaine’s dragon’s flank. “Hey Aestus.”
The dragon let out a soft growl as it's golden eyes followed me as I entered the enclosure for the dragons.
I was welcomed by a large earth dragon bounding up to me, it's scales were decorated with moss and flowers. It was my mothers dragon, her name was Primula.
I licked my lips and let out a high pitched whistle. The trees rattled as a gorgeous midnight blue dragon emerged from the trees. “Hello Chorus.” Chorus nudged my shoulder with her nose.
“possumus ire nunc”
I smiled, knowing I was the only one who could hear her nervous voice. “Yes, we can go now.” She lowered one of her large wings and allowed me to climb onto her back, the saddle was already on her. I stroked her blue scales. “Let's go raise the moon.”
With one powerful stroke she flew off the ground and we were in the sky. I pulled the hood of my cloak over my head as Chorus flew towards a mountain.
We landed on it's peak and Chorus gazed up into the sky. She let out a loud roar that echoed throughout the kingdom and probably farther out.
I smirked as I saw a sliver of white light begin to rise from the horizon. Chorus watched it intently with her silver eyes until it reached its high point in the sky.
“Nice work girl.” I said looking at the crescent moon in the sky.
Chorus looked back at me before taking off into the sky again. She flew over the village looking down as the lights flickered out in homes. Once we finished flying over the village we went towards the outskirts of the kingdom. It was our duty to patrol the whole land until dawn.
I was lying on my back looking up at the stars as Chorus continued to fly. It was peaceful tonight like every night in Sanguis. I began to doze off until Chorus let out a screech.
I bolted straight up. “What's wrong-” My eyes widened, a dust dragon. It's large torn wings flapped up and down as it came towards Chorus and I. I spotted a figure riding on the back of the dragon. I furrowed my eyebrows, how could someone own a dust dragon. They are fierce bloodthirsty creatures, that should be hard to tame. I stroked Chorus. “It's okay girl, it's tame. Just fly past them.”
I looked over my shoulder when the dust dragon passed us, the person riding it looked at me. They were masked and their dragon had purple war paint on it, but the encounter ended almost as quickly as it started. I looked behind myself as the dragon flew further away from us, and I bit my lip. Who were they?

Smoke It had been a few moons since Azazela arrived. I have to admit I was rather surprised to see her riding on the back of a large dust dragon. She definitely spooked the village. She had been staying in my house for a while, at least until hers was finished being built.
I was sitting on a wooden chair as she slept in my bed. I set down my cup of water and threw on my brown leather jacket. I stepped outside my slowly deteriorating wooden house, only to be greeted by a menacing growl. I rolled my eyes and looked up at the dust dragon that was staring down at me. “We’ve known each other for three moons Sicarius, I’m not gonna kill Azazela.” The dragon huffed and looked away from me. “I hate you a lot!”
The dragon ignored me. I stuffed my hands into my pockets and I felt something brush against my legs. I grinned and pretended not to notice it, until I felt something sharp sting me in the back of my calf. I spun around and snatched the small grey and black dragon into my arms. “Canus! What did I say about biting people!”
The dragon named Canus squeaked and licked my face. He squirmed out of my arms and began to run in circles, eventually running into a tree. I face palmed. “You are one dumb dragon.”
He looked up at me with his clueless ashy grey eyes. “audivi quod”
I chuckled. “I know, thats why I said it.”
Canus narrowed his eyes and began to follow me as I began to walk. We traveled through town, I winked at some of the girls as I passed them causing most of them to blush. I rounded a corner about to enter one of the shops before someone gripped the collar of my jacket and pulled me into the alley between the two buildings.
“How's it going Slate?” It was a white haired girl I recognized, she held the blade of a knife at my throat.
I smirked and lowered her blade with my hand. “Ah Demitria, come back for another round?” I winked at her.
She huffed and shoved the blade into its sheath. “Nox wants something from you.”
“Nox always wants something.” I shoved my hands back into my pockets. “What does he want.”
“He’s heard about your little friend, the one that arrived a few moons ago.” She placed her hands on her hips. “He wants to meet her.”
“And why is that?”
“Are you thick? She has a dust dragon! How many people in Sanguis can tame one of them!”
“He just wants to recruit her then, to become one of his little fighting slaves.”
“I never said that.”
“You basically did.” I crossed my arms. “My answer is no.”
Demitria snorted. “You do remember what Nox does to people who don't follow his orders. Right?” She gripped my forearm and rolled up the sleeve to reveal a symbol carved into my wrist.
“I don’t associate with Nox anymore. You should know that.” I said ripping my arm out of her grip.
She patted my chest. “Whatever you say, Slate.” She began walking out of the alley, she paused and turned around. “Oh, I’ll be sticking around for a while… if you ever change your mind.”

Sun The villagers are always kind, they brought me gifts in the morning every time I rose the sun. A little girl handed me a sunflower I smiled at her. “Thank you.”
She looked at me with bright round yellow eyes. “The stem will burn, and you will wither.” She giggled and ran off.
I was speechless, that was an odd girl. I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Princess are you okay?”
“Yeah, I'm fine.” I cleared my throat. “I should probably finish my patrol.”
Once I returned from my flight and let Aestus, my dragon, go into the enclosure the royal family had from them. I spotted Chorus the beautiful moon dragon sleeping in one of the large trees. I frowned remembering how a couple nights ago Oberon came back from his flight telling stories about someone riding a dust dragon. Of course no one believed him, no one has ever tamed a dust dragon before. I believed him though, Oberon has never lied about anything in his life.
I glanced up, Oberon’s tower was above the dragon stables, there he was standing on his balcony. Sometimes I think he sleeps on it. I felt Aestus nudge my back. I smiled and patted his larger gold head. “Care to help me get up there?”
Aestus’s eyes glittered with joy, he lowered one of his large white wings so I could climb on his back. He flapped his wings and flew me up to the balcony. Oberon stepped back, I giggled he was always scared of Aestus, ever since Aestus threw him off the stables roof when he was little.
I leapt off of Aestus and stepped onto the balcony. I ruffled Oberon’s light brown hair. “What are you doing?”
“Just watching the sky.”
“Are you waiting for something to happen?”
“No…” He paused. “Maybe.”
I put my hands on my hips. “You think the dust dragon rider is going to come here?”
He tapped his chin. “Yes. They didn't look like any normal civilian rider, they were wearing a mask, and armor. And I haven’t seen anyone paint their dragons like that before.”
I bit the inside of my cheek, I was significantly older than Oberon, by three years. I was born in the midst of a war and Oberon was born just after. Maybe I could know about the paint on the dragon. “Did you see what the paint looked like?”
“It was purple, it was mostly in streaks, but there was like an animal skull or something on it's leg. It wasn't paint though.”
When he mentioned the skull my stomach tightened. “Was it a scar?”
“Don't remember, it could’ve been. Why? Do you know what it is?”
“Yes.Mother told me about the war, she told me a lot about the the other side she said they called themselves the Direnth Empire. They would paint their dragons purple and carve a skull marking into them. But the thing is, we defeated them. We slaughtered their king and sentenced all their followers to death. They shouldn’t be back.”
Oberon looked stunned. “Do you think it's possible that the dust dragon I saw was just an old one from the war?”
I shook my head. “No. Father made sure that no dragons from the other end of the war would be able to be claimed again.”
“So you’re basically saying that the Direnth are back?”
“I don’t want to jump to conclusions but yes. I think they are.” Suddenly a sharp pain surged through my hand. I let out a wail and gripped it.
“Elaine, are you okay?”
“I-” Another jolt of pain ripped through my hand this time spreading up my arm. I looked at the hand and noticed my veins were turning a violent shade of orange. “What is this?”
“Did you touch anything while you were out? Anything poisoned? Did someone odd give you anything?”
The first thing that came to mind was the little girl and her sunflower. “The sunflower!” I gasped my lungs began burning, the veins on my arms have turned orange.
“Where is it!” Oberon screamed frantically.
My head began to spin and I fell to the ground. “Aestus…” Then it was gone, the world was dark.

Snow I sat in the back booth at an inn. I had been staying in the small town of Terra for quite some time now. I had my feet resting on the table as I twirled a freshly cut sunflower in my hand.
A little girl came up to my table and dropped off a bowl of warm food, it was grey and I had no clue what it was. I lowered my legs and stared at the girl for a whole five seconds, she wasn’t looking at me. “Thank you.” I muttered.
The girl nodded her head and looked at me. I took notice to her yellow eyes, I smirked. “You’re a fire elementalist aren’t you?”
Her face turned into a look of panic. “I-um, uh…”
I smiled. “It's fine. I'm an air elementalist. What are you doing here, shouldn’t you be in Elementum?”
“Mama said that it was too dangerous there.”
“Hmm, what's your name?”
“Stella.”
“Stella, how much do you get paid?” I asked.
She shifted her feet uncomfortably. “I don’t think I should say…”
“I'm just gonna guess… not much right. I mean your family owns an inn.” I placed a sack of gold coins on the table and Stella eyed it greedily. I grabbed the little girls hands. “Stella listen closely. If you complete a simple task for me, then all that gold is yours.”
I knew she would fall for it, she was young and gullible. She nodded her head. “Yes, anything.”
I grabbed the sunflower I was playing with. “I want you to give this to the princess.”
“Why?”
“She's an old friend of mine… she loves sunflowers.” I said rolling my eyes.
“Um… okay.” She grabbed the sunflower from my hand and left for a moment, probably to say goodbye to her parents, before making her way out of the inn just as someone else entered.
It was the dust dragon girl, she took a seat at the bar. I watched her quietly as I ate my food. As soon as I finished the last scoop I wandered to the seat next to her. “Good Morning.”
“Good Morning.” She replied.
“I'm Demitria.”
“Azazela.”
I made a fake gasp. “You’re the dust dragon girl!”
“Um, yeah. If you want a signature, I’m sorry I don't do those.”
I chuckled. “No… lets just say I have a proposition for you.”
She raised an eyebrow. “What?”
I smiled. “I’d like you to meet my boss, his name is Nox.”
